The Road to Publication: Final Layout

The final layout proofs of Inchie Quilts arrived, were proofread, and were returned back in April, but I was just too buried under the task of actually proofreading them (in addition to a ton of other stuff right then and since then) to post about it. But let me tell you how cool it is to see everything come together and look like a real book, and look even better than you imagined it could!

When the layout proofs arrived here, everything stopped so I could sit down and look through the pages. The layout proofs are in color, and look pretty close to what the finished book will look like minus the binding and cover. From the first page I was just so pleased with the layout and the details. The extra graphical elements like ruler scales on the page edges that the design team added were just perfect. The quilt photography and reproduction was beautifully done; there are closeups of individual Inchies so you can really see the embellishments and the dimensional details.

I just can’t wait for you to see the finished product, and well, I can’t wait to see it myself! Word is that it may be back from the printer and in stock at AQS any time now (which is earlier than expected!), so hopefully, I won’t have long to wait!

Live Inchie Demos at Patchcom Quiltfestle

I’ve been preparing materials for Inchie demos this week, since I’ll be visiting with Birgit and crew at Patchcom in Schönaich, Germany this Saturday for the 9th Annual Patchcom Quiltfestle. I’ll be sharing the step by step process for creating Inchies with quilters and fabric artists at the fest, as well as signing books and showing Inchie quilts from the book. I’ll also have samples of the InchieSee & InchieDo Viewer Tool & Ruler Sets which should be available in a couple of weeks.

Inchie Ornaments Finished!

Where the Inchies Are workshop is a 2-for-1

Here’s a little secret about one of my workshops that I’ll be teaching at the AQS Quilt Expo in Des Moines: The Where the Inchies Are workshop (aka Colorwash Inchies workshop) is actually two workshops in one! It’s an all day workshop where you’ll learn to make Colorwash Inchies in the morning, and then after lunch, you’ll learn to sew gorgeous satin stitch appliqué to make the background quilt for the Inchies.

Correction!

It’s been brought to my attention that the cutting instructions for the Inchie Petit Fours quilt in Inchie Quilts contain an error. The cutting instructions on page 45 should read:

From the brown fabric, cut:
One 2” strip, subcut into thirteen 2” squares

From the cream fabric, cut:
One 2” strip, subcut into twelve 2” squares

This does not affect the yardage needed for the project.

Please download the Inchie Quilts Errata and keep it with your copy of Inchie Quilts!

Inchie Quilts Workshops Scheduled

If you’re ready for an Inchie Quilts workshop, the time has come! I’ll be teaching workshops and lecturing about Inchies at the AQS Quilt Expo Des Moines, October 28-31 at the Iowa Events Center in downtown Des Moines. Learn to make Colorwash Inchies in the Where the Inchies Are workshop, or choose the Inchie Mini Quilt and make 12 or 16 Inchies for a small quilt.

The Road to Publication: Illustrations

AQS sent me a stack of illustrations for the book for my review. I’ve been eager to see these, in hopes that the designer was able to take my chicken scratch drawings that looked like a preschooler’s sidewalk chalk art that I submitted with the manuscript (example at right) and make them into something wonderful that looked like it actually belonged in a book. The drawings are supposed to show you just how to embellish Inchies with a variety of beading and embroidery stitches (among other things), so it’s pretty important that they be clear and easy to understand. Looking like an adult drew them couldn’t hurt either.

I’m happy to say that I was thrilled with the results! Elaine, the book designer, was somehow able to wave her magic illustrator pen and make all of my penciled drawings look perfectly clear, in scale and easily understandable. I’m sure there was a lot more to it for poor Elaine than “waving her magic pen” considering what she started with, but I’m so glad to have someone like her working on the book.

So far, the publication process has been quite a pleasure despite the amount of work involved, and I’m totally confident that the final product will exceed my every expectation. Next I’ll be seeing actual page layouts, with the text and illustrations laid out exactly like they will be in the book, for review one last time before the book goes to print! I can’t wait!
